Initiative Retro Canvas Template

How is your initiative doing?

This FigJam L&D Initiative Retrospective Canvas is a practical template designed to help learning and development teams step back and take an honest look at what an initiative has actually achieved once it’s out in the world. Whether you’ve launched a workshop, an e-learning module, a resource, or a wider programme, the canvas gives you a structured way to review progress, impact, and perception over time, rather than relying on gut feel or end-of-project assumptions.

The template is intended to be used at regular review points after launch. Our default approach is to run a retrospective one month, three months, and six months after an initiative goes live. That gives you early signals, emerging patterns, and longer-term insight. You can adopt that cadence as-is, or adapt it to suit your organisation from day one. The key is consistency and follow-through.

This canvas will help you:

  • Review what an initiative has achieved and what it hasn’t
  • Track how agreed metrics and signals have changed over time
  • Surface learner, stakeholder, and L&D perceptions
  • Separate evidence from opinion during reflection
  • Make clear, defensible decisions about what to do next

The template includes:

  • Space to capture original intent, outcomes, and target metrics
  • Structured reflection on achievements and gaps
  • A simple way to map metrics and signals over time
  • Dedicated sections for perception and narrative
  • Decision-focused prompts to guide next steps

We explore how to use this canvas, alongside other review and sunsetting tools, throughout our Competent Creator workshops and in our consulting work with L&D teams. If you’d like to go deeper or apply this approach in your own context, get in touch and we’d be happy to talk.
